The Art of Teaching

(dedicated to my teachers
and my colleagues)

The title is a lie / but it pulled you in, didn’t it?

This poem is not about the art of teaching
It’s about what drives people to teach

Some people are just born to be teachers
They have an insatiable curiosity
About the world / and about people

Because that’s the art of teaching
It’s about people / not the subject taught

Oh / I guess I lied before, didn’t I?

Some people teach because they think
They can do it better than it was done to them

They were not good students themselves
And it’s students like that they want to help

See / for both camps of teachers
That’s the art of teaching

It’s about the students

The motivation is less important
Than the drive that comes out of it

This poem was written to the “Art of (blank)” prompt at Poetic Asides. It also became a dedication poem.
