After Foreshadowed

Looking for the clues / the cleverness of the writer
Hiding in plain sight / what is to come

And yet / how often / it is a smell
A scent / that overlooked sense

Is what I am looking for / amongst the words
Or a comment / by a minor character

That is the seasoning / the writer does
Just as the home cook / reading a recipe

Cracking the pods / sliding out the peas
Chopping up the red herring

Mixing the ingredients / to make a cohesive dish
Pleasantly surprising / but not jarring

The aroma of cooking / the presentation on the plate
Hoping the meal satisfies / as it was foreshadowed
